Interview with Matt Mullenweg from Akismet

Akismet is one of the best spamcatchers out there today and onWordPress has managed to get a few questions answered by Matt Mullenweg from Akismet.

In the end of 2005 Akismet started their mission to protect the blogosphere from spam and now they prevent more then 8 million spam comments every day. The success wasn’t unexpected to Matt since spam is always a threat. And we can guess that the success will continue especially if you believe Matts opinion that spamming will continue unless the economic incentives are removed.

When asked how much spam they manage to prevent the answer is,
For most folks we have accuracy rates of 99.99% or higher.

I know that I am happy for the protection Akismet gives.

Akismet is a contraction of Automattic Kismet. Our favorite definition of kismet is “Kismet (principle), the magnetic attractive force that actualizes the playing out of karma; often used in the positive sense.”

SEO resource for WordPress

One of the top search engine experts out there Jim Westergren has written a few tutorials on how you get the search engines to love your WordPress blog. We will return to these later.

Making money by blogging

There are a few different ways for bloggers to actually make money on their blogs. For advertising and similar it is important to remember that ads of any kind are against the WordPress license, you need to host your blog yourself to have them.

Advertising programs

The biggest prgoram out there is Adsense, Googles text link program often called contextual ad program, which more or less matches the ads to your content. There is of course a lot of programs out there with various kind of advertising but so far Adsense has worked the best for me.

You get payed by click and the payment can be about $ .10 to $1 a click depending on what ad is displayed. Notice that Google doesnt pay until a certain amount has been earned so if you have low traffic on you site it might take a while before you get any payment.

Writing reviews of products or sites can be very rewarding, you get to speak your opinion about something and you get paid for it. generally the person paying for a review asks only for a fair review of his site or product, you don’t have to sell out. You can make about $100 for a review if your blog is a bit trusted.

Selling links

Search engine optimizers are always looking for related links to link to their sites and lots of them are prepared to pay for one. Often the value of the link gets calculated from the blogs pagerank and you can get anything from $100 a year up to maybe $1000 if your blog has very high pagerank.

Writing jobs

If you are a good writer there is a big chance that people will want to hire you for other writing jobs. A blog with lots of readers and a specialized content has a good chance of attracting customers that want you to write about your area of expertise for their sites or papers.

Selling your blog

A good blog with returning readers has a certain value, there is a big chance that someone, if approched with the idea, would like to buy it. Making blogs from scratch and selling them is hard work but the value of a good blog is not to be underestimated.

If your blog is well visited at least one of your readers will have thought; hey, I would like a t-shirt from that blog. Nowadays there are millions of t-shirt companies out there letting you design your own t-shirt for print on demand. Lots of them have automated services for payment and giving you a % on the sale.

Doing it yourself:

WordPress and the search engines

WordPress is considered to be very good with the search engines by most search engine optimizers but how good is it if you compare it to the biggest competitor, blogger?

Rumors have said that Google puts more weight to blogger links then to other links, I find this hard to believe. Blogger has been very spammy for quite a while and giving an unfair boost to those links would not only be counterproductive it would also badly damage the reputation of the giant among search engines.

Putting more weight to links comming from blogger is counterproductive because the main product is Google.com, not blogger. Damaging the search results in the engine (giving an unfair advantage to bloggerlinks will actually skew the whole system since weight of the links is one of the most important factors in the search result) will result in a little bit worse search results. Worse results in the serp (search engine result page) is something that Googles leaders are well aware that it can destroy a search engine. Remember that Google got where they are today because the other engines said ; a little better? our results are good enough.

How about the reputation, isn’t Googles rep pretty bad as it is? Well, in certain aspects, like the logging of what you do stuff but when it comes to their search algoritm they have a very good reputation and they are working hard to keep it. Say what you want about them but when it comes to a fair serp Google has the morals of a saint. What company would claim that someone else is more important and more trusted then the own company, expecially when your company is one of the biggest in the world. Try searching for Search Engine on Google and you’ll see that wikipedia goes first, before Google. Am I claiming they are good? No, but when it comes to their serp they have very high standards, they dont infect it with faulty weights even to boost themselves.

Blogger links does NOT get a linkboost compared to wordpress.

Fastest Growing Blogs

As far as I can tell the Fastest Growing Blogs on WordPress is just the blogs who are posting most at the moment. Have tried a few things and it’s my belief that lots of posts give this rank, not lots of text.

More research reported later.
